Hillsboro Beach fishing charter departing the Cool Runnings dock

Broward County, Florida

HILLSBORO BEACH FISHING CHARTERS

Private fishing charters for Hillsboro Beach anglers, departing from Cox Landing in Fort Lauderdale. Half, three-quarter, and full days on the 32-foot Contender.

Hillsboro Beach is a three-mile barrier island between Pompano and Deerfield, and the fishing off A1A here is some of the best on the Broward coast. Most Hillsboro guests already know that. What they want is a private 32 ft Contender rigged for the sailfish and mahi edge they can see from their beachfront balcony, run by a captain who fishes the Hillsboro Inlet six days a week.

I'm Captain Jason. Cool Runnings launches from Cox Landing in Fort Lauderdale, roughly twenty-five minutes south of the Hillsboro Lighthouse. We run north out of Port Everglades and drop lines in your home water inside half an hour. Full charter rates and inclusions are on the Cool Runnings charter info page.

Charter action shot near Hillsboro Beach

Hillsboro Beach sits on the north side of Hillsboro Inlet, with the Hillsboro Lighthouse marking the south jetty and the oceanfront estates of Millionaire's Mile stretching north to Deerfield Beach. The reef edge off this stretch is textbook offshore water: 100 feet of water a mile off the sand, 400 feet inside three miles, and the Gulf Stream color change inside five. That compressed drop-off is why the Hillsboro ledge produces sailfish and mahi on half-day schedules.

The Hillsboro Inlet itself is the second most fishable cut in Broward after Port Everglades. The south jetty rocks hold snook, jacks, and the occasional cobia, and the current rip off the north point stacks bait on an outgoing tide.

Captain Jason times most Hillsboro-focused trips around that tide window so the pelagic bite outside the inlet lines up with the bait push. Winter sailfish push tight to the beach here on cold-front north wind days, closer than they run off Fort Lauderdale.

The three-mile stretch of A1A through Hillsboro Beach is almost entirely private estate frontage, with the Hillsboro Mile running north from the lighthouse. Most of my Hillsboro clients own one of the oceanfront homes and have been fishing with me for years. A few own private docks on the Intracoastal side and ask about dockside pickup. I don't launch from private docks, but the drive to Cox Landing is twenty-five minutes down A1A and parking is free at the home base.

Spring and summer bring mahi runs offshore and tarpon staging around the Hillsboro Inlet mouth. The tarpon migration pushes through here in April and May, and we sight-cast live mullet to rolling fish along the beach during the mullet run in September and October. For a steadier reef day, mutton snapper and lane snapper on the local reefs hold up year-round between 80 and 150 feet.

OUR NEIGHBORHOODS IN HILLSBORO BEACH

HILLSBORO MILE & NORTH HILLSBORO

The three-mile stretch of A1A from the lighthouse north to the Deerfield line is almost entirely oceanfront estates, with the Hillsboro Mile section carrying some of the highest-priced residential frontage in Florida. Most of my Hillsboro bookings come from this stretch. Pickup is a straight A1A drive south, no bridges in the way.

HILLSBORO LIGHTHOUSE & SOUTH END

The south end of Hillsboro Beach, from Hillsboro Boulevard south to the lighthouse point, sits right on the north side of the inlet itself. The lighthouse is the obvious landmark and the inlet is the fishing water. Guests here are often repeat clients who book twice during a winter stay.

HILLSBORO SHORES & INTRACOASTAL SIDE

The Intracoastal-facing homes between A1A and the water hold the deeper residential canals, with private docks running most of the length. A few owners have asked about dockside pickup, which we don't do, but the drive to Cox Landing is a non-issue and the morning run from the inlet rejoins their home water.

DEERFIELD BORDER & NORTH HILLSBORO MILE

The top end of Hillsboro Beach where the town blends into Deerfield Beach. This neighborhood shares the same reef and inlet access as the rest of Hillsboro, and the drive south on A1A to Cox Landing stays under thirty minutes outside of rush hour.

Local Knowledge

WHAT MAKES HILLSBORO BEACH FISHING UNIQUE

The honest thing to tell Hillsboro guests is that Cool Runnings does not launch from the Hillsboro Inlet. Every trip departs Cox Landing in Fort Lauderdale, about twenty-five minutes south down A1A. The run from Port Everglades up to the Hillsboro ledge takes about fifteen minutes once we are offshore, so you are still fishing your own water. The drive just happens before the engines fire instead of after.

Hillsboro Inlet is a working inlet with a reputation for ripping current on an outgoing tide. Captain Jason times the morning run around the tide push so we are not fighting water through the cut, and we reroute through Port Everglades when seas get heavy from the east.

That tide-aware routing is the difference between a rough start and a smooth one. The reef right off Hillsboro Mile sees pressure from Boca-based boats running south and Pompano boats running north, which concentrates traffic on well-known numbers. The spots that consistently produce for us are off the public charts and come from years of working the ledge between the lighthouse and Boca Inlet.

One local note: Hillsboro Beach is tiny on a map, only about three hundred residents total. There is no commercial dock or marina inside the town itself. Every charter captain who fishes this water launches from Pompano, Deerfield, or Fort Lauderdale. Cool Runnings runs out of Cox Landing specifically because the Port Everglades inlet is more reliable than Hillsboro on a bad weather day, and the twenty-five minute drive buys you a boat that can make it out when a Hillsboro-launched trip gets canceled.
